Hello, I am Marcio Arab Murad.
I work on the development of Multiscale Computational Models for Coupled Phenomena in Porous Media

I'm a researcher of the National Laboratory for Scientific Computation (LNCC), located in the city of Petropolis, RJ, Brazil, where for 30 years I have developed research, education and collaboration with industry in the general field of coupled phenomena in porous media. In this fascinating area I'm interested in developeing efficient multiscale computational models for coupling flow, electro-chemistry, transport and Geomechanics with particular emphasis on reservoir simulation and capable of handling geological complexity.

Research Interests

Go to next/previous page

I have strong interest in the physics of coupled phenomena in porous media. In this fascinating area I have contributed to the research in the following topics subjects:

Models for Coupling Flow, Transport and Geomechanics Incorporating Geological Complexity:

In this topic MM has been working with several collaborators on the development of accurate models for hydro-mechanical coupled phenomena in porous media containing several geological features such as salt domes, faults, open fractures, veins, karsts and vugs. The discretization of the system is pursued within the framework of the fixed stress split in the context of iteratively coupled methods. Discrete models are constructed within the context of locally conservative numerical methods in strongly heterogeneous geological formations. The aim here is the reconstruction of the constitutive laws of equivalent properties in outcrop geometries with data input form geologists to be inserted in coarse-scale simulators

Multiscale Models for Nanoporous Media:

In this genuine multidisciplinary topic MM has developed multiscale models for porous media containing nanopores such as active clays, shale gas and coalbed methane, with applications in unconventional sources of energy and contaminant transport in reactive soils. Modeling for bridging scales and discretization techniques involve formal homogenization methods, Density Functional Theory for confined fluid in nanoporous and Reduced Models for fractures.

Multiscale Models for Low-Salinity Water flooding

In this topic MM has developed homgenization methods to upscaling the local electro-chemistry of aqueous thin liquid films lying between crude oil droplets and a clay substrate in sandstones. The methodology allows to reconstruct numerically relative permeability curves, partition coefficients and capillary pressure and a function of the water composition by invoking the local solution of the Poisson Boltzmann problem and computing the disjoining pressure isotherms and contact angle.
